Chickens are known to flick through their feed. This typically results in a substantial amount ending up all over the ground. A small portion of this feed is eaten by chickens; however, most of it ends up soiled and wasted.
Standard feeders waste nearly 200 grams of feed per chicken per week. The feed discarded on the ground attracts vermin and requires owners to clean the waste daily.
When you consider the savings in wasted feed, the Little Flocker will pay for itself in just over 1 year.
The owner of a Motherflockers chicken feeder will not have to deal with the nuisance of cleaning up wasted feed – our design reduces feed waste to virtually zero. Testing reveals that when compared head-to-head with a standard commercially available gravity-fed pan feeder, our chicken feeders save about 10 kilograms in feed per chicken per annum.
The only feed that ends up on the ground with Motherflockers chicken feeders are the occasional spots of feed that stick to the outside of the chicken’s beak.

The ‘Little Flocker’ is extremely easy to use – just follow these steps:
Find a level area to locate the chicken feeder (preferably undercover). Although the ‘Little Flocker’ is designed to be water-resistant, driving rain may enter the feeding area and cause the feed to harden when dry. This has the potential to interrupt the flow of feed.
To deter vermin from accessing the feed, it is advisable to elevate the chicken feeder off the ground on a steady base. An upturned plastic square tub or bucket will work well as a base, as a rat will have trouble climbing the slippery sides. It is essential to ensure the bottom of the chicken feeder slightly overhangs the base at the front. This prevents vermin from climbing up the base and getting a foothold.
The ideal height placement for the feeder will vary depending on your breed of chicken. Average-sized full-grown layer hens will need the feeder elevated between 9 to 12 inches off the ground. If you are noticing any feed on the ground, raise the feeder until the chicken must stretch slightly to access the feed. That height is the ‘Goldilocks zone’ where no feed gets wasted.
If you own a chicken tractor or mobile pen, the chicken feeder still works well when placed directly on the ground. However, it’s crucial to ensure that vermin cannot enter, and there may be a very small amount of wasted feed if you opt for this configuration.
Once the chicken feeder is in place, take the lid off and fill it with your preferred dry feed, then place the lid back on the device. Within 30 minutes, the chickens typically find the feed. When one hen figures it out, they will all follow.
When dominant hens attack other chooks around food, they usually ‘go for the head’ by pecking the comb of their victims.
As such, the hens at the lower end of the pecking order are typically forced to wait until a standard feed pan is clear before they can sneak in a quick feed.
Once any hen inserts their head into a Motherflockers chicken feeder, their head can’t be attacked. This allows your hens to feed in peace until they withdraw their head.
Finally, it’s been proven that chickens are attracted to the colour red. This is why Motherflockers chicken feeders feature a red feeding area, which draws chickens in for their meal.
